Make Versus Buy: Popcorn

This is the first post in a new series of mine called ‘Make versus Buy’ where I share the cost difference of making versus buying your favourite store bought items. Plus you’ll get a recipe to go with each homemade version.

Sometimes making works out a lot cheaper and other times it’s similar to the cost of buying so these posts aim to break that down for you so you can decide the best option for your family.

The first few posts in this series will be all about snacks. First up is popcorn - this is a super easy one to make and you can do it easily even without a popcorn maker.

The Cobs brand mini packs work out at 80c per pack whereas making your own is approximately 22c for a similar sized serve. So it’s almost a quarter cheaper to make your own.

Ingredients are all worked out at Woolworths regular prices (I used Woolworths brand popping corn kernels, Westgold butter and Macro Organic coconut oil) so these may vary slightly if you purchase ingredients on sale or a different brand.

I hope you found this useful!

Let me know in the comments below if you have any requests for a ‘Make versus Buy’ post on something you currently buy but want to make instead.
