Make Versus Buy: Hummus

This is the next post in my ‘Make versus Buy’ series where I share the cost difference of making versus buying your favourite store bought items, plus a recipe for you to DIY.

Today I’m looking at hummus - my favourite condiment to have in the fridge.

The one I’ve chosen to price compare is the ‘Nuffin’ brand which is one of the best ones you can get at the supermarket and is free of additives but still contains vegetable oil. It will cost you $5 for a 200g tub ($2.50/100g).

Making your own will cost you $3.85 for a 350g jar which works out to be $1.10/100g, less than half the cost of buying it! Plus you get to avoid the vegetable oil.

I worked out the cost buying everything at full price, so you if get any of the ingredients on sale or you grow your own lemons it will be even cheaper to make. And even cheaper again if you start with dried chickpeas and cook them.

I hope you found this post useful!
